The American electronic/synthpop musical project, known as Owl City was started in 2007 by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Adam Young in Owatonna, Minnesota. By 2009, Owl City gained commercial success due to the release of the major label debut album Ocean Eyes, and its hit single ‘Fireflies’.
As a child, Adam Young suffered from insomnia and began spending his evenings in the household basement, where a computer and several instruments were set. Young started experimenting with these instruments. As a result of Young’s experimenting with music in the household basement, Owl City was formed. Young uploaded his songs on Myspace as Owl City and gained a significant following. This led him to signing to a major label.
Inspired by Jonathan Ford of Unwed Sailor and Thomas Newman, Owl City’s music style can be described as indietronica and alternative. A significant amount of Young’s Christian faith is also incorporated into his music.
